Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT)

You may have heard of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy and understand the power of using targeted magnetic pulses to treat mental illnesses, but what is MeRT?

MeRT is an acronym for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. And, it combines the power of TMS with other protocols to target specific areas of the brain with magnetic stimulation and electrical stimulation.

While the idea of stimulating the brain with electrical and magnetic frequencies may sound intimidating, it is actually rather gentle as advanced technologies allow this process to be highly targeted.

MeRT protocols are revolutionary and used to treat imbalances in the brain that lead to mental health conditions.

What is MeRT?

MeRT is a completely non-surgical, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment for illnesses like depression. Simply put, it can reprogram your brain’s neurochemistry to address underactive or overactive parts of the brain that can cause unwanted psychological symptoms.

More technically speaking, MeRT utilizes quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) assessments, Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) assessments, and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) technology.

A qEEG is a non-invasive assessment protocol that maps the brain’s neural oscillations (brainwaves). It is completely non-invasive and involves putting electrodes along the exterior scalp. The information gathered from the EEG is used for highly targeted rTMS treatments.

An ECG/EKG is a similar procedure that measures electrical signals coming from your heart.

Used together, we can measure the brain-heart coherence which allows rTMS therapy at Brain Center TMS in San Diego to be as accurate as possible.

rTMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic induction coils placed along one’s scalp to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It can be used to increase activity in underactive parts of the brain. And it can be used to decrease overactive parts of the brain as well.

Why would anyone want MeRT?

People seeking MeRT are looking to find relief for their mental illnesses. It is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. And while it is not yet FDA-approved for other mental disorders, we are continuously finding more evidence that it may be used to effectively treat other illnesses.

The Connection Between Neurons and Mental Health

Your brain is composed of roughly 100 billion neurons. These neurons communicate with each other through pathways in the brain.

As certain pathways are used more frequently, they become stronger, and vice versa. Underused pathways become weaker when they are not frequently used.

You can think of it almost as exercising for the brain. Reading a book, doing math, solving a problem, or even playing video games can act as exercises for the brain.

Similarly, moods and mental states reflect activity along certain pathways. For example, someone who is depressed for long periods of time will strengthen pathways associated with depression. They may also weaken pathways associated with happiness.
